Bluebirds Fan Travels From Essex
Meet David Spriggs. This dedicated Bluebirds fan travels over 260 miles from Basildon in Essex to get to home games at the Conygar Bridge Meadow Stadium. David grew up in Pembrokeshire and despite since living in England for many years still has family connections with the region and fond memories of his time in West Wales. Now he tries to time his family visits here to fit in with home matches whenever possible. At the time of writing, three games have been taken in this season and another visit is scheduled before Christmas.
David recently shared some of his early memories of following Haverfordwest County in the late 1960s and early 1970s. His first memory of a local game was one played between Pembroke Borough and the Bluebirds and another when he combined a Cleddau River fishing trip with football by dashing between the old Bridge Meadow to watch a friendly with Hereford United and tending his fishing rod. David fondly recalled collecting the autograph of Ivor Allchurch on many occasions, searching him out at most games in pursuit of a precious signature.
Football at all levels has long been a passion for our intrepid supporter and he was inspired in 1968 by watching the great Manchester United side on TV as they defeated Benfica in the European Cup Final. The following year saw David take in the England v Wales Schoolboy International at Bridge Meadow Stadium.
A move to London followed in the early 1980s and of course lots of opportunities to take in top flight football. Many years as a West Ham season ticket holder followed but all of the London teams received a visit.
These days, grass roots football has attracted David's interest once again, as the 'corporate' nature of the game at higher levels has made it less attractive. Basildon United are the beneficiaries of this passion for the game with regular visits being made but still the Bluebirds capture his imagination.
Connections to the club are numerous with current Assistant Manager Micky Ellis having been a school contemporary and the mother of former player Nicky Woodrow is a friend. In addition, David recalls playing football locally against current bluebird, Greg Walters dad. Whilst also by amazing coincidence David was at infant school with Greg's mum, Alison. Haverfordwest County and football in general are fortunate to have such a passionate and dedicated follower. Thanks David!
