Haverfordwest Under 12's vs Newport County Under 12's

Haverfordwest Under 12’s met Newport County (away) in the quarter final of the Under 12’s Academy Cup.
For various reasons the side could  only field the bare eleven players and they were up against a formable Newport side.
For the first twenty minutes the sides were even, then a trio of dispute goals dented the under 12’s confidence.
In the second half Newport dominated the game, able to run on their full compliment of subs, leaving the heroic Haverfordwest players struggling against a very fast- paced game.
The final score of 12-0 to Newport did not really reflect the game and a serious injury in the last minute  to goalkeeper James Harries  marred the day.
Coaches Angie Nicholls and Blayne Wherrett would like to thank the loyal  players and parents who made the long journey to Newport.

Plans for 2011/2012.

Academy Administrator Bernard Steer reports:
During season 2010/2011 the Academy has run under 12s, under 14s and under 16s squads in the FAW Academy Cup Competition. Performances have been good overall with the under 12s qualifying for the quarter finals of the competition.
No provision was made for matches in another competition for under 13s or under 15 during the past season and the Academy is grateful of the loyalty of these age groups, who either have had no matches (under 13) or playing a year up (under 16s).
It is now the intention for the coming season to enter the under 13s squad and an under 15s squad in Welsh Schools Competitions to ensure regular games for these vital age groups.
Schools matches will be staffed by Academy Coaches who will ensure continuity and progress from the coaching already carried out.
For further details please contact me at the Club.

Progress in 2011

Academy Administrator Bernard Steer reports

Since the Academy resumed in January the under 12s, under 14s and under 16s have taken part in the first Academy Futsal Competion in the Llanelli/Swansea area. This was a highly successful event and although only the under 14s won, the players enjoyed the competition and found it a good way of getting back into matches after what was a very prolonged Christmas/Mid Season break.

Mark Falzon left us in January and Blayne Wherrett was a recent addition to assist Angela Nicholls with the under 12s.    Several coaches have received their Assessments from Verifier Derek Roberts who also has given mentoring advice to add his experience to the quality of the coaching.

Steve Batty has taken over the management of the under 19s and has started with two excellent results in matches both played on the Bridge Meadow pitch when many other grounds in the area were totally unplayable.

Academy matches have been played at Aberystwyth where all age groups found the home teams were formidable opposition, but are hoping that the return to grass match play will be the beginning of a return to getting better results.   A re-arranged match for the Under 16s against Carmarthen Town at windy Llansteffan resulted in a 6-0 defeat to a strong team where the  age balance was tilted towards the  16th birthday, although we were impressed by the quality of the Carmarthen team.

On Sunday 20th February, 2011 Academy pride was restored when the under 16s playing Merthyr Town in the only Academy match of the day won 2-1 with goals from Rhys Jenkins and Ryan Howells to take away the visitors unbeaten Academy record.   There were  good performances throughout the squad and   Head Coach of the under 16s, Lukas Gamble was full of praise for the players  in what he described as “a great game”.
The next games are against Llanelli on 13th March, 2011 when the coaching and training which has resumed allowing for school half-term, will be put to the test in what are always very difficult matches for our Academy.

Plans are in hand to carry out the SPARQ fitness testing for the 12-19 age groups in line with the guidelines of the FAW and the training already attended by some of the coaches

The results of matches and the next  set of Player Assessments to be carried out on the whole of the Academy will indicate the level of progress made in 2010/2011 and what steps need to be taken to ensure an environment of continuing improvement.

Requests for Trials for the Academy are always welcome and should be directed to Bernard Steer, Academy Administrator at the Bridge Meadow Stadium.
