There was no doubting that the better team won this JD Welsh Cup tie at Cardiff University against STM Sports on Saturday but there were a few hiccups on the way. Alaric Jones, Antonio Facciuto and Lee Trundle were all missing and then with the game not 10 minutes old, skipper Sean Pemberton was forced to leave the field with a dead leg. The always reliable Ricky Watts had to fill in as a central defender and Jack Britton came on at full back for his first game on his return to his hometown club. For the 20 minutes or so that it took the reorganisation to get sorted, it was the home side who looked the more threatening in front of goal. However, the Bluebirds slowly took charge of the game and, following a succession of corners, it was LEON LUBY who opened the scoring on 40 minutes with a deft lob from 20 yards when spotting the home 'keeper off his line. Two minutes later Danny Williams broke through on goal but this time the 'keeper pulled off an exceptional save.
The Bluebirds were quickly out of the traps after the break and Jack Wilson was through on goal only to be unfairly ruled off side. Within minutes Wilson went on a skilful touch line run before squaring to DANNY WILLIAMS whose clever swerving shot from the edge of the penalty area was unstoppable.
STM Sports battled to get back in the game and, with 10 minutes remaining they pulled one back after a shoddy spell of Bluebirds defending. In the dying minutes it was the away team which was in control and a third goal looked likely at the end but Danny Williams saw his shot cleared off the line with the 'keeper well beaten.
So the Bluebirds are deservedly in the hat for next Monday's 2nd round lunchtime draw. Watch this space!
