Taffs Well 3-1 Haverfordwest County

The Bluebirds will be bitterly disappointed by this result, after a game in which they played extremely well for long stretches, but then conceded two late goals to a side reduced to nine men.
The first half was a fairly tight affair but the Bluebirds were still able to show the classy passing football through the midfield which has characterized their game lately. Then, five minutes before the interval, they conceded a poor goal when Craig Morris and Phil Cattlin mis-read each other’s intentions and Morris’s attempted clearance ricocheted in off Cattlin’s shins.
But after half-time the visitors seemed to get on top and things seemed to start flowing their way when the Wellmen’s Jason Dixon was red-carded for a second bookable offence. Shortly afterwards came a Blues’ equalizer when Darren Griffiths steered the ball in after good approach work by Nicky Woodrow.
What proved to be a turning point of a sort came three minutes later when the Well’s Darren Williams laid out Owain Thomas with a gashed shin after an bad two-footed tackle. He was dismissed, the Wellmen were down to nine men, and the theory would have had it that the Bluebirds’ path to victory had been smoothed.
What followed though was quite bizarre. Taff’s Well pulled back their remaining forces in a packed defence, aiming to try to hit the Bluebirds on the break. They did this so well that their strikers Nathan White and Tyrone Topper, who had each damaged the Blues in the earlier game on the Bridge Meadow, managed to sneak upfield just twice and poach the two goals which left the visitors humbled.
Mike Ellis and Wayne Jones will now be pondering the disappointing way in which the Bluebirds side is playing such good football through the midfield but is having problems in converting chances. They may just console themselves with the thought that the newly-formed strike partnership of Griffiths and Woodrow has in fact notched three goals in two games, with Darren in every case converting after Nicky’s approach. Maybe they can score a few more in the two upcoming home games and brighten the outlook.
On Saturday they are at home to Cwmaman Institute, kick-off 2.00.
