Undy Athletic AFC
The Bluebirds dominated territory and possession once again, but a combination of stubborn Undy resistance and maybe an occasional reluctance to try the actual shot left them holding on to just the one-goal lead at the end.
The game seemed to take a little while to get the cold out of its bones, but from the start the Bluebirds were looking to a play sharp passing football, in contrast to Undy’s more quick-fire raiding. The midfield of Elliot Scotcher, Elliot Thomas and Ricky Watts was shifting the ball from flank to flank and probing constantly, while the two full-backs, Leon Luby and Alaric Jones, were surging through in support, with Alaric regularly sending in the ever-dangerous Danny Williams.
But it was Undy who took the lead in the 16th minute when what looked like some poor communication in the Blues defence saw a ball from Sean Pemberton go straight to an opponent, and for GARETH CULLIMORE to strike for the opener. But the ideal riposte came within a minute, when a fine passing move ended with Ashley Bevan slipping a neat ball behind the defender and the irrepressible WILLIAMS darting in for yet another goal in his tally.
The Blues had a few other threatening moments in the first half, with Jones going on a powerful run down the middle without quite getting in the 25-yarder which might have caused a problem for keeper Smallcombe. Pemberton headed a Scotcher corner just over the bar, and Bevan nearly forced an own-goal in going for a Luby cross. But the vital goal came in the 40th minute when another lovely move saw the final pass reaching THOMAS 15 yards out for him to drive in coolly.
The Blues were well on top in the second half and the fact that they didn’t go on to hand out the kind of defeat they gave to Goytre United or Ammanford may well have been due to a slight reluctance to pull the trigger. Certainly they had far fewer shots on goal than in either of those other games, although Undy had fewer than half a dozen. All through the second half it looked as if a third Bluebirds goal would arrive at any moment and two of the nearest moments came when Undy’s fine goalkeeper James Smallcombe had had to come out of his area to clear danger and on each occasion Williams capitalised on the opportunity. The first time he raced through and hooked in a brilliant shot from an oblique angle and with the ball racing away from him, only for a defender to get back and make a fine goal-line clearance. The second time he went a jinking run round the defence and was finally blocked as he tried maybe to walk the ball in.
But the Blues kept putting the passes together, kept attacking to the end and, despite two touchlines lined with jittery supporters all waiting for the whistle, they came through with the three points in the bag and another deserved win.
On Tuesday 30th October, the Blues are away to Cardiff Met in the WPL Cup.
On Saturday 3rd November they are at home to Llantwit Major in the Nathaniel Cars League Cup.
