TON PENTRE .. 0 HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY .. 4
On a Friday evening on which Penybont faltered and dropped two points at Briton Ferry, the Bluebirds struck another decisive win as their free scorers made it 15 goals in 4 games and some fine saves from Steve Hall kept a third clean sheet in four.
The Blues were quickly into their stride and, after Danny Williams and Ben Fawcett had missed chances they took the lead in the 4th minute when LEE TRUNDLE met Williams’ corner with a glancing header. Trundle was proving pivotal in the Blues’ attack and in the next 5 minutes his through passes nearly put Williams and Ben Fawcett in. Fawcett was then fouled by Josh Hardy, giving Haverfordwest a free-kick in a good area and Elliot Scotcher’s shot over the wall forced Ton keeper Fleming to make a diving save.
Tim Hicks then cleared a threat neatly by heading away a cross from the dangerous Robbie Thomas, but at the other end another Scotcher free kick saw Sean Pemberton shoot narrowly wide. But after Thomas had picked up a yellow card for a foul on Fawcett, the referee warned the Bulldogs defence that they were making too many cynical fouls. And Ton were then undone as they failed to clear their lines after a 27th minute corner and PEMBERTON, who had remained in the box, turned the ball into the net with a smart finish .
Then, as the news came through from Briton Ferry that league leaders Penybont were beginning to struggle in their game, the Ton Pentre defence were caught napping and were punished. In the 37th minute a through ball was played to FAWCETT and he slid it under Fleming in the Ton goal. Williams was then involved again as he found Trundle from an under-hit clearance and ‘Trunds’ tried to scoop the ball over the keeper, but Fleming was able to collect. The Bulldogs kept battling to get back but two good saves by Steve Hall and a fine block from Leon Luby kept the Blues’ goal intact.
Ton started the second half on the front foot and one free kick cannoned back off the Bluebirds’ wall, but in the 58th minute the visitors went four up as TRUNDLE headed in from an excellent cross by Scotcher. The pressure continued as Ricky Watts put a low cross into the box for Elliot Thomas to hit. Thomas tried to tap the ball in from close range but Flaming makes a good save with his body.
The tempo increased as Trundle, in search of his hat-trick, held off the challenge of a number of Ton defenders before turning a powerful shot into the side netting. Ton’s Lee Price broke through on goal and tried to put it past Hall but the Blues’ keeper made a great save
The win was comprehensive and deserved, another fine team effort, and there is pressure now on leaders Penybont.
The Bluebirds’ next game is away to Afan Lido on Saturday next, 5th January.
