Afan Lido FC
AFAN LIDO .. 0 HAVERFORDWEST COUNTY .. 4
Afan Lido are never an easy team to visit and were in fourth place on Saturday morning, so this really clinical and comprehensive win was a superb result for the Bluebirds, rounding off one of their finest-ever away runs.
The game was a triumph obviously from Ben Fawcett who scored yet another brace, but defensively too the Bluebirds were superb, with Sean Pemberton outstanding once again, Tim Hicks, Ricky Watts and Leon Luby tight on the Lido attack and Elliot Thomas playing exceptionally well in the deep midfield. Most pleasing in a way was the fact that the work which the squad had put in lately on set pieces paid off handsomely with three of the four goals coming for dead-ball moves.
The Blues broke from the kick-off and Ashley Bevan, put through by Danny Williams, sent a low shot narrowly wide of the post. For the first 20 minutes it was a tight, physical game, with the Blues finding the spaces but Lido resilient in midfield. But the deadlock was broken in the 20th minute when a long ball in reached FAWCETT in the box and he headed in neatly. Lido had rarely threatened and we reached half-time with the Blues a goal up.
Early in the second half, the 55th minute, came a second goal when PEMBERTON went up for a corner, raced to meet the ball and powered in his header. Kaid Mohamed came on as sub and was involved immediately as he released Williams, who in turn laid it off to Tom Dyson, but the midfielder couldn’t quite keep his shot down. Lido had their first chance when Jack Todd put pressure on Steve Hall but Hartland sent the re-bound wide.
The Blues then missed a real chance when Williams beat the Lido defence to race clear, but steered his shot into the side netting. A third goal came in the 72nd minute, when the Lido defence stopped to claim offside, the referee waved away their appeals and opportunist FAWCETT sprinted clear to fire home. There was no question now of the Blues stepping off the accelerator, for, after another set piece, HICKS found himself unmarked at the far post the guide the ball home.
After this brilliant away run of three clean sheets out of four and goals going in at a rate of four a game, the Blues return to the Meadow next Saturday, 12th January, to play third-placed Cambrian & Clydach, kick-off 2.30
