Match Score : 1-2
Goytre United FC
Although Goytre United were handicapped by playing with ten men for 70 minutes, the manner of this Bluebirds win was so emphatic as to convince spectators of their present status as one of the league’s front runners. The home side did in fact go ahead as early as the 2nd minute when they forced a scramble in the Blues box and, with keeper James Gwilt sustaining a knock in the process, Corey Francis was able to scramble the ball home. Many referees would have blown for a foul on the keeper but in this instance the goal was allowed to stand. Fortunately Gwilt was able to recover from injury to continue and produce another fine and safe display. The back four in front of him also played superbly. Matthew Broome was outstanding at right back and, with Antonio Facciuto, sealed the flanks very well. Sean Pemberton snuffed out any threat from Goyt’s experienced striker Martin Rose. Goyt’s Damon Thomas received a red card in the 20th minute for a very late tackle on Walters and with an extra man the bluebirds pressed forward. Jamie Evans was able to use his attacking skills to surge forward time after time and threaten the home defence.
Half Time 1-0
During the first half, bluebirds had their chances but the second half saw a virtual seige on the Goytre Utd goal. In midfield, Greg Walters and Ricky Watts were energetic and skilful, Nicky Palmer also had a really fine game. Up front, Ashley Bevan was flanked by Rhys Dalling and Lee Hudgell and they kept the pressure on the Goyt defence throughout. The ball was pinging around as shot after shot was blocked or parried by the home defence.
Despite the pressure, the equalizer did not come until the 60th minute when after another scramble, Bevan tucked the goal away with a superb turn and low shot from 12 yards. From then on the Bluebirds’ progress towards that winning goal was remorseless. Bevan saw a shot deflected for a corner, Walters came very close but saw his effort pushed away and Hudgell couldn’t quite convert. Facciuto saw a point blank header blocked on the line, Jamie Evans hit a speculative effort from the half way line which was tipped over and Bevan hit a shot from 20 yards which knocked the keeper off his feet. Finally, the goal came in the 82nd minute when Broome went on a fine run down the right, got past his man and crossed from the by-line for Bevan to nod the ball inside the far post.
Goytre then threw caution to the wind and began to push players forward causing some consternation in the blues defence. Two glancing headers wide of the post was all they could manage though as the blues defence held firm.
There was one more dramatic incident in the 88th minute when Walters was yellow-carded for a heavy tackle and his Goyt opponent received the side’s second red card for his retaliation.
